Our standard double room was clean, warm, comfortable and equipped with all we required. Breakfast served to order was excellent, overlooking the Thames Pathway - an optional route into the City. The availability of an honesty bar was an added bonus of which we availed. With its own car park the River hotel is ideally situated and most convenient for a short city break.

I was staying the weekend with my 15 year old for a day conference and a day of tourism. Very handy to be able to park the car for two days. The room was quiet and warm (adjustable radiator enabled us to have a comfortable sleeping temperature). Staff were welcoming and helpful and breakfast was very tasty. I would definitely stay here again if I was staying over in Oxford.

Really enjoyed my stay at River Hotel. So many good things to say, from the lovely friendly welcome I received from Julian to the great location, easy parking and comfy beds. Stayed 2 nights and slept really well on both nights because it was so quiet (unlike the bigger hotels where you can hear doors slamming and people walking up the corridors at all hours of the night). All the staff were super friendly and the breakfast was just superb! I will definitely stay here again - this is a little gem of an hotel.

We stayed 2 nights in October. Staff were all helpful and friendly. Staff were very responsive regarding a strange noise and dealt with it (heating system in another room). The room was fine, older but clean and well-cared for. Screens on the window would be helpful. We had the window open and a number of flies came in. Breakfast was very good and offered variety, including cooked to order choices. The location is convenient to the train station and the university area. Everything in easy walking distance.

We recently stayed at the River Hotel. The staff were amazing, friendly and helpful. We were given early check-in which was much appreciated. The breakfast was delicious and wholesome. The hotel is old however the location and staff make up for that and we will certainly stay there again.

My room was perfect for me. A comfortable bed and a lovely breakfast was provided. The welcome and attention to detail was above and beyond. Having a car park and being such a good location to all the history of Oxford was just what I wanted. A short easy walk took me to the main colleges, shopping and lots of lovely restaurants. Having a lovely garden so close to the Thames was fantastic.

Pros: Compared to other hotels in Oxford, this hotel was relatively more affordable.Parking was free and abundant, full included breakfast included, friendly and helpful staff. They provided a fan so the room was comfortable enough in the summer heat. 3-5 minute walk to train station. Quiet, away from the crowds in the town.Cons: hotel is a little dated, beds were a little saggy on the sides, with a higher middle, difficult to use sink with one hot water and separate cold water faucet. Tiny television.I would still recommend this hotel to anyone visitingOxford.

The most unforgettable thing is the breakfast every day, a perfect breakfast makes people feel happy all day long. The perfect location to complete the Oxford tour on foot.
Reviewer: Bin | Wed 14th Aug 2024 | 3 months ago
The hotel rooms are somewhat dated and very basic, but if you just need a place to sleep and don't plan on spending much time in your room, it works just fine. Just don't expect more than a basic room with dated furnishings. Our room was clean, fairly small, and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom had a jerry-rigged shower with a curtain railing installed over a tub. But it's a reasonable cost and the full breakfast was excellent. The staff were helpful and friendly.

The staff at the hotel were welcoming, friendly and helpful. The person on reception was knowledgeable about Oxford and was able to answer our "tourist" questions well. The breakfast room staff were excellent and the food offer good - cooked breakfast was fab! The room/ensuite were cleaned to a high standard and room serviced daily. Although we did not use the honesty bar, we had a look and it was a good idea. Great to have the parking available and the option to use it on the last day after we had checked out as we had our final look around the City before travelling. The slight downside was the comfort of the mattresses, which were too soft for our liking. The room was warm but a fan was provided and the windows could be opened. Loved the grass leading to the river which was a good place to sit to contemplate the day after breakfast! Hotel well placed for the centre of the City. Overall, a great stay! Thank you.

Great boutique hotel just blocks away from attractions like Oxford Castle and Trinity College. Beautiful English garden right on the river. Great dining close by either in the city or go the other direction to avoid the bulk of tourists. The on-site breakfast was beyond amazing. So filling even our twenty-somethings didn't need a lunch. Even better was how well the staff took care of us. Can't recommend enough.

Thank you for a lovely stay - highly recommended. If i have to pick on anything then perhaps people who have to vacate at an unsociable hour i.e. 4am could be advised to do so quietly and not bang doors as to disrupt the rest of us.

Easy to come and go on foot. Clean, comfortable room, although the decor and furnishings are a little dated. Very pleasant to be able to sit in the little flower garden, towards the river. Nice little hotel with garden overlooking the Themes. Near train-station/Hop on-hop off station #1, Old but clean. Wasn´t able to open the window for fresh air which had been nice. The man who work there during the afternoon was extremely service-minded and helpful regarding sightseeing's etc. Thank you (we didn´t get to say good bye :O). The man who served breakfast was also very helpful. Minus was no "plant food" yoghurt/barista"milk" for coffee and cheese (informed that I was vegetarian before arriving) just marmalade which is fine if you like sugar. If you eat meat or like an English breakfast it´s perfect, some fruit (nice) but for me who doesn´t eat meat and like a nutritious breakfast it was harder. Took bananas on the toast. A bar was available (you signed on a list) even though no staff was on duty, which is a nice gesture to the guest. Comfortable beds. Over all, a nice little hotel who care about their guest. Hopefully more nutritious choices in the future. :)

My sister and I came to visit Oxford and did an overnight stay. Everything at the hotel was perfect. Very clean rooms, everything we needed from hairdryers, extra pillows, several towels, to toiletries and extra snacks we could purchase downstairs. Breakfast is included and was also good with lots of variety (and lovely waitress service!). On our second day we wanted to leave our luggage to make the most of the day and The River Hotel was most accommodating, we were able to pop back at 7pm to collect our bags and make it in time for our coach! We had the best time, thank you to the hosts - we’ll definitely be back!

The River Hotel is ideally located in Oxford very near the main railway station and a short walk to the city centre of Oxford. The hotel itself is clean and functional. The staff are friendly and very helpfulThe rooms again are clean but aa bit cramped in the bathroom. Overall, the hotel is comfortable but a little old fashioned. Perhaps for some this is it's charm. Needs a modernisation to bring it up to standards of other hotels, in my opinion

This hotel is a real gem.Right next to the river, a 4 minute walk from the train station, yet only a 15 minute walk from the middle of Oxford.A great breakfast, friendly staff, everything in my room I needed. The perfect place for a stranger - like me - to Oxford.

Bit of a smallishbathroom for a family room . Complementary water was a nice touch .Great breakfasts each morning. Nice cosy bar area withanhonesty bar and a good selection of drinks .Phil the hotel manager was helpful , friendly and informative about things to do in the area andmade us feel very welcome in this family run hotel.. excellent customer service from everyone we met , lovely ladies serving breakfast . Recommend this small family run hotel , with free parking a real bonus too .

Very handy if you are visiting Oxford for theatre shows only 15min walk from hotel.Carpark is great too no worries where to leave car. A cosy and clean but very dated hotel and i think £160 per night is a bit to much to pay...i did find a cheaper price when got home for £97 so if went again i would look for paying that.

Stayed 1 night with my family when we visited Oxford. Hotel is small but good location, about 15mins walk to the city center. Owner's recommendations to have dinner in the nearby pub turn out to serve one of the nicest pizza we have eaten. We have to leave early the next day & couldn't enjoy the bfast provided but the hotel is so kind to allow us to take some cereals & fruits & juices back to oyr room so that we can have bfast on the go.

Lot of plus points - location, reasonably priced, exceptional choice at breakfast, comfortable beds. Bottled water, biscuits and honesty bar which wouldn't usually expect given rating. Helpful staff. We (family of 3) stayed at River Hotel for 2 nights and it was a very pleasant experience. We checked in quite late at night but it was not an issue and was organised for. The breakfast and service both were excellent. And the location of the place couldn’t have been better. So the location 100m from the railway station is great. There is ample onsite (behind) parking for cars. Parking in Oxford is VERY difficult and soon to be a 'low emissions zone', only. The River Hotel is currenlty outside the zone. The staff/hospitality are excellent. Great, cooked to order, breakfast. 200-500m to restaurants/pubs and middle of Oxford - flat and easy 'on foot'. There are stairs to negotiate outside and inside the Hotel. Nice lawn area. Beds comfortable. Very helpful staff.Disliked · To be blunt, they need to spend some money and upgrade the 1980s decore, especially considering its expense. A 17", crappy, LCD TV doesnt cut it. Small room. Tiniest bathroom; literally cant fit 2 people. Some noise as its on the main road but not too concerning. No AC - a problem in hot weather. Fan provided.

Breakfast really lovely with cooked and other items such as fruit yoghurts and toast etc. We were also accommodated to have an earlier breakfast due to our coach departure and needing to be at University college for opening. Staff friendly. They do an honesty bar where you take what you want and fill Firm I to pay later when leave. Will stay again if visiting oxford.

The Moto " Large enough to be comfortable-- small enough to be friendly" really fits the Hotel. Reception on arrival gave an atmosphere of care for one as a visitor, nothing was too much trouble, everything was explained. I stayed with two old friends. Oxford was a convenient place for us all to get to . The hotel was comfortable, clean and well equipped. The breakfasts were good. The owner was very helpful with restaurant suggestions. Cote and the Bangkok restaurant were in easy walking as One of us was walking slowly with a stick which was kindly lent by the hotel.I had ideas of sitting in the garden by the river but there was only one bench but a small lawn with chairs. My only problem was getting there by car as the bridge by the hotel is closed for several months and I did not find the directions clear. I had to phone as satnav was useless. I was given more helpful directions then. Once the bridge is reopened ,access will be much better.Walking access from the station was good round the roadworks.

The hotel is very well located, just before the rail station as you approach Oxford from the west and just before the work being done on the rail bridge - no access problems. My room, a standard double, was as described, with older furniture and bathroom fittings but perfectly adequate and everything worked. The hotel was excellent. The staff were helpful, polite and very welcoming. The location was very good. I arrived by train and it was about 5 minutes walk from the station, yet near the city centre and next to the river so a nice walk along the river and through parkland.

We chose river hotel as it was close to the city centre. We often travel as a couple but it was first time for us travelling with a 5 month old. It could not have gone smoother thanks to the hotel. They gave us a room that was easy to access and I was able to store my mummy milk in there fridge. At breakfast all I had to do is hand thesterilising bags over and they microwave these for me. I’m fussy with a cooked breakfast but had nothing to complain about here; loved it. They also provide cots! The decor and music playing made me feel like I’m staying at my grandmas. Very nostalgic. I would highly recommend this place!

I stayed for one night with my youngest son, in one double room and one single. Both rooms were very clean, comfortable, and quiet, en-suite with over bath power showers. Great breakfast with a lot of choice. I would highly recommend the River Hotel as a great place to stay and only 10 minutes walk from the centre of Oxford. Looking forward to a return visit soon.

This well-located hotel has a spacious and secure car park, ideal for a mature couple visiting the Oxford museums and exploring the area on foot.On arrival, I went to Reception and the gentleman on duty (Andy) offered to help carry our luggage to our room. This considerate standard of care was applied to all aspects of our stay. Our room was a good size and comfortably furnished. The windows were well-glazed so we experienced no noise issues. The central heating was very efficient, and we noted that extra bedclothes were provided in the wardrobe, if required. Our accommodation was very clean, and everything we needed had been provided. The high standard of care also applied to the well-designed and maintained garden. We enjoyed excellent hot breakfasts on both mornings, cooked exactly to order with good quality ingredients. We will not hesitate to recommend The River Hotel to our family and friends; with just one "negative". There are a few steps up from the car park to reception, so this lovely hotel may not be suitable for some people who have mobility issues. It's best to check with the hotel before booking.

The River Hotel provides a perfect stopover option for anyone visiting Oxford. It is superbly located for those walking the Thames Path and is just a short walk from the centre of Oxford. The car park is a bonus (and we were able to book and pay for an extra space at lower cost than the public car parks in Oxford). We received a warm welcome and the breakfast was just brilliant (we enjoyed a full fry-up and fresh fruit/cereal).The room was clean, warm and comfortable with an ensuite. Overall we thought it provided excellent value for money. Thank you.

Enjoyed our stay at River Hotel. Convent location with parking. Clean and warm room. Very well cooked breakfast with quality ingredients. Needs updating in areas (bathroom, shower) but this is out weighed by the positivesStaff smart, friendly & helpful, particularly lady who served breakfast, who gave very good advice on how to get too Christ Church College by taking a pleasant walk alongside the River adjacent too Hotel.

Very nice hotel with lots of character but the main plus was the excellent location - it's just a short distance from the railway station and buses. I needed to be able to get to the John Radcliffe Hospital easily (buses every half hour), but I also wanted to be near the centre of Oxford as well. The hotel was also very accommodating when I needed to add on a couple of extra nights at short notice. The rooms were clean and had everything I needed. The breakfasts, cooked to order, were very good, and the staff friendly and helpful.

The River Hotel was nice. It combines modern comfort with traditional British life, which is what I would consider to be a classic English habitation. The breakfasts were substantial and excellent. The personnel was excellent. (I also had a unique experience with them; they were the only ones who could provide me with an invoice; neither at the train station nor in the bookstores nor in the eateries could they even comprehend the request.). In conclusion, I enjoyed my time at the River Hotel.

The hotel is minutes from the train station and taxi rank as well as the hop on/hop off buses. All the rooms has a separate fan or electric heater available and if you haven’t enough sockets the hotel can provide extension cables. Please not the rooms are clean but if you’re disabled there are a lot of step into the hotel and up to the floor as there is no elevator installed.

Lovely old hotel just outside of the centre.Great for parking and a sweet garden area overlooking the river. Rooms were comfortable and clean. I say rooms as we requested a move because of a knee/stairs problem. Andrew said he would see if he could do a bit of juggling, just pack our case and leave it and on our return, we had a new room. Many thanks for that. The breakfast was lovely with everything freshly cooked. All of the staff were extremely helpful and courteous, nothing seemed too much trouble. The only slightly downside was that the stair carpet was a little worn and tired looking. We would definitely stay here again should we return to Oxford.

We really liked the River Hotel, yes - rooms are basic and dated… but really clean and comfortable. The owners were great, very helpful and friendly. Breakfast catered for all with plenty of choice. We took a lovely walk along the river into Oxford centre and ate at a restaurant recommended by the owner. The parking was a huge bonus… plenty of space and we were able to leave the car for much of the day we checked out to again explore the city. Definitely recommend and would return should I visit Oxford in the future.

We loved our stay at River Hotel. The room was spotless and a good size. The beds very comfortable, we didn’t hear any noise from the street we slept very well. The location is ideal to visit Oxford, a few minutes walk from the center or a longer and lovely walk along the river. We could drop our bags earlier and leave them after checking out. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

Just back from a busy weekend in Oxford, and we were lucky enough to stay at the River Hotel. A few minutes from the station and overlooking the river. Friendly staff and a great breakfast! There was a problem with our taxi which didn’t turn up, which would have made us late for our daughters graduation, a member of staff, overheard us discussing our predicamentwith the receptionist and he immediately said he’d give us a lift, we arrived in time, thank you! definitely above and beyond.

We had a great stay at River Hotel. Our room was comfy, clean and had everything we needed …. Including a fan! Like other reviewers we agree the bathroom flooring is due for renewal but, honestly, it’s a great place to stay with lovely hosts. Breakfast every morning spot on, all only an approximately 7 mins walk into the centre. We’d defo stay again. Recommended.

I stayed five nights at the River hotel. The location is great! Just a few minutes from the train station and walking distance from downtown. The hotel is by the river, which makes it very picturesque and inviting. There are several paths by the river by the mooring boats, which are very nice to walk and can also be used to get to different sites in town.I worked during my stay and had no internet issues. The staff was very nice, and the place is very quiet and organized.Overall, I had a great time.

As my title said ,clean ,comfortable, friendly.I was visiting Oxford with granddaughter to visit university,so did the job as we were out all day .It’s a shame the properties next to it are looking very run down ,as didn’t make the area inviting ,having said that I would stay again as close to train station and easy walking to the centre, and river walks.

The hotel could do with a little update, the lighting in the room was especially annoying, but it is clean, comfortable, and quiet. The staff are exceptionally nice and helpful. The breakfast is great, lots of choices, including full English, prepared according to your wishes. Also, the location is very central yet quiet and well placed for a walk along the towpath.

I stayed at the River Hotel for nearly 2 weeks in July 2022. I had a great experience with the hotel and staff. I stayed for 2 nights in the main hotel with my kids, then for about 10 nights across the street in their annex for a longer term stay. It’s a clean hotel, the staff was extremely helpful, friendly, and accommodating. It’s less than a 10 min walk from the heart of all the activity in the center of Oxford, which made my room nice a quiet. It’s a very quick walk to the train station and an easy walk to the bus station, both of which I utilized. In the annex, my window was large and it was very bright with a great view, which was a plus. When I return to Oxford, which I will because it’s a lovely city, I will plan to stay here again.

My first stay at the River Hotel, despite many previous visits to Oxford. Small hotel, friendly atmosphere, the room was clean and tidy and the bed very comfortable. En suite bathroom was user friendly, including a strong and easily adjusted shower. The location is perfect, overlooking the Thames with easy access to riverside walks and with the city centre no more than 10 minutes walk away. The ample space for car parking is a definite plus in Oxford. The breakfast was excellent - good choice of fruit and cereals, and well cooked eggs, sausage etc. Only downside was the chaotic breakfast service every morning, with orders mixed up and delivered to the wrong tables, no printed breakfast menu, and complete lack of any apparent system to it all.

Centrally located and easy to reach, I very much enjoyed my stay at the River Hotel. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful throughout and offered great advice about where to go and practical support. The hotel is close to Oxford station, but calm and situated near charming residential areas and the name-giving river, so great for an evening stroll to recuperate after a busy day. Room was not big but well equiped for a single business traveler. Excellent bed and complimentary tea+coffee in the room made it easy to wind down or even work using the wifi. Breakfast was plentiful and made by your choices, only to note that a possibility for an earlier/longer breakfast time than 8-9 would be greatly appreciated . I would recommend to stay here and will be glad to visit again myself.

And not just a simple call to reserve a taxi but assistance and recommendations to assure success in making your next connection? All this, a clean room and a delicious cooked to order breakfast each morningadd to the pleasure and comfort of staying at River Hotel. That was my experience, and why I highly recommend River Hotel.

Very welcoming host. Hotel was comfortable and had all the amenities we needed for a couple of nights stay. Breakfast was plentiful and well cooked.Only slight downside was that we had an elderly member of the family who needed a wheelchair and there was no step free access to the hotel. This is an older property and it does have creaky floors and some interior doors that were noisy to open and close but this did not detract from the overall pleasant experience staying there. The hotel is also ideally situated for the theatre and centre shops and attractions.

A nice hotel for a stop-over. A little dated but clean and comfortable. Walk into town via the river or main highway. Very nice breakfast and friendly staff. The en suite bathroom is rather cosy but adequate. Bring your own toiletries. ….some provided but limited. Comfortable bed with a shortage of pillows. A pity about the doors closing early and having to gain entry around the back of the building up some steep steps to use the keypad. Parking good. Overall pretty good.

I wanted somewhere inexpensive to stay for one night where I could get a bit of work done ahead of a meeting in Oxford. This hotel was right by the station but with lovely views of the river, extremely quiet. The room was clean, tidy and had everything I needed. The bedroom had been recently decorated, though some of the fixtures and fittings in the bathroom were slightly showing their age cosmetically. But everything worked fine.

Excellent service - I arrived at 11.30am after travelling from Scotland on the sleeper train into London (*without getting much sleep!). My room was ready for me, clean and with a very comfortable bed and a neat and spotless en suite. Quiet in the room despite the hotel being on a busy road. Hotel clearly very well cared for and although some of the decor / furniture is a little dated I was delighted with the place. I didn’t book for meals, just my room, so I cannot comment on the catering. I will definitely be back!

The River Hotel has many advantages: free on site parking, 10 minute walk to city centre, 2 minute walk to the station, superb breakfast, friendly staff. However, the room is very dated (although very clean), the pillows were not at all supportive and the room was quite chilly. There was a radiator but this didn’t work. Thankfully there was a halogen heater to plug in. I liked the idea of the honesty bar, but it would have been nice to also have access to extra supplies of tea, milk, etc.The room I would give 2 stars but because the breakfast and location were so good I think 4 stars are deserved.

A few minutes walk from the centre of Oxford with a free car park. Spotlessly clean and the staff were very friendly. The receptionist/ waitress Sharon was so helpful, nothing was too much trouble and the breakfast was very good.Thankyou for a lovely few days.

My husband booked the short stay as a surprise for my 60th birthday. Unfortunately my husband was unwell so unable to go so my friend came instead. The hotel were so accommodating. They changed the room from a double to family room. The room was clean and comfortable. When checking in the people were so friendly and took time to explain how to get into Oxford via different routes and what was around. We made use of the honesty bar the first night and treated ourselves to a wine in the room. The second day we followed the river into Oxford and spent the day exploring. The hotel was in a prime location and so easy to find everything. My husband had booked tickets to see a musical in the New Theatre. This was very east to find.Breakfast was delicious and there was a lovely view overlooking the fast flowing river. The whole stay was very good value for money.Kay Ford

We loved the hotel, it’s an older building but that does not affect your stay, it’s gives it character, with friendly staff, who are very helpful and it has everything you could need, lots of little special extra’s including an honesty bar, excellent Gluten Free breakfast.

The hotel had two great positives. Location to the city centre and all its attractions and parking. It was also clean and welcoming. The reception had alk the information we needed to make the most of our visit including info about local restaurants. Breakfast was good and again the staff could do enough to ensure we enjoyed the experience. Certainly was another visit in future.

It’s lovely and friendly. We stayed for three nights mid week in December 2021. We are greeted by friendly Sharon who made us feel very at home. She went above and beyond. Will definitely go back. There was no scrimping. Breakfast was lovely with extra toast and extra eggs and as much coffee as we wanted. In the room there were more biscuits each day and the towels were changed and the bed was made. All very nice.❤️

If you are looking for a hotel that is modern and with up to date decoration this is not the hotel for you, but if you are looking for cleanliness, comfy beds and lovely staff and best of all the most amazing freshly cooked breakfast( I had kippers and scrambled egg which was gorgeous) and free parking then this is definitely the hotel for you. We had a lovely one night stay when going to the theatre which was only a 10 min walk away, if we visit Oxford again we will be back.

Very convenient for the city centre and public transport with the bonus of free parking! Lovely little garden overlooking the river. Surprisingly quiet given main road location. Very clean, warm and plenty of hot water. The hotel is a typical Oxford house, so has steep stairs and narrow corridors which might be challenging for those with mobility problems. The rooms are proper house rooms, not just identical boxes. It's not 'modern', but if you like a place with character, you'll enjoy staying here.

Another great stay at the River Hotel. The service is always excellent, nothing is too much trouble and the fresh cooked to order breakfast is delicious. Very clean, tidy, and the traditional decor lends itself to the charm of the hotel.Great location for the town centre and the train station, both only a few minutes walk away. I will continue to choose this hotel over the more modern ones as the service and location far outweigh the ultra modern and soulless.

We stayed for 2 nights and found the hotel to be well located just a short walk from the tourist attractions. The hotel itself was comfortable and warm with great service and a five star breakfast. The room was at the back of the hotel and very quiet. My only complaint would be that the liquid soap in the bathroom appeared to be watered down which meant you needed twice as much to wash with. The hotel is in need of a little bit of an update ie new carpets on the stairs etc but that didn't affect our stay in any way.Staff were incredible!
Response
Thank you for your excellent review and we are glad you enjoyed the weekend with us.The hand soap is an anti-bacterial hand wash with alcohol; it has not been watered down. You are not the first to question this and having received poor reviews about the product we shall switch brands.

Hi there - as you have asked for feedback, I will let you know a couple of things.I was surprised by the check-in: I arrived at 3pm on a Sunday and was let in via a buzzer after I had phoned the number on the back door and told where to find my room key.The double bed had 2 dips on each side; my husband had intended to join me but given this, I advised him to stay in London as I was in Oxford for work. The best thing about my stay was that the room was very clean. Also, I was not aware that the rate had included breakfast- my PA made the booking and so my fault but it would have been useful to have had a reminder once I arrived. I thought the rate was a non-breakfast rate. Again, I should have known. With a new coat of paint throughout, and new beds and pillows, this could be a top-notch hotel but the value doesnt match the price in my opinion.I wasnt going to write anything and wouldnt give a bad review on TAdvisor as this is a clean, convenient spot to stay.

I enjoyed my stay but was a little disappointed that breakfast was not available before 8am.However, the receptionist kindly made us up a tray of cereal, fruit and juice which was perfectly adequate. The cooked breakfast on the other day was lovely.I think the price is a little expensive as the property is basic but comfortable, in particular the bathroom, and the facilities are minimal. The receptionist was very helpful and accommodating.

We really enjoyed our time in Oxford and staying at River Hotel was a bonus. The decor is a tad dated but everywhere was spotlessly clean which is what you want during these trying times. The breakfast was excellent with lots of choice. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I asked if it was possible to have a room close to the ground floor as my husband has mobility problems and doesn’t do stairs and I had a phone call offering us a room on the lowest floor and offering to reserve a parking space next to the door. You can’t get better service than that. The hotel is a short walk to the bus and rail station which meant we didn’t have to use the car.

We stayed for two days to attend a wedding. Booking process was easy, the rooms were nice and clean. The hotel has an appealing atmosphere of a typically English place in a brick stone house that is entered through a porch, narrow stairs and rooms like your own bedroom at home. Very familiar and comfortable. Breakfast was great (the delicious full English breakfast was served in the cozy dining room), and the staff was friendly and helpful.

We chose River Hotel due to it's location. It was only a short walk into the centre of Oxford and a few minutes walk from the railway/bus station. The staff were friendly and welcoming and ensured I had a space to park where I could open the car doors to get my wheelchair in and out. The décor was dated but this just added to the quirkiness of this old hotel! The bed was comfortable and we slept well. It was nice to have a bath as well as a shower with plenty of hot water. The cooked breakfast was very good and there was also a cold buffet breakfast. We had a lovely weekend and would return to the River Hotel next time we are in Oxford.

We chose this hotel predominantly for its proximity to the station as we were using it as a base for a trip to Wembley and also because it offered free parking. We were so pleased to have done so. The River Hotel is a quaint, privately owned establishment, run by really lovely and helpful people. They gave us lots of useful local information and nothing was too much trouble. The room was spotlessly clean, the breakfasts were perfectly cooked with high quality ingredients and seemingly unlimited coffee and toast. All with a view of the Thames to watch the boats and the ducks! We would thoroughly recommend it and are looking for an excuse to stay there again!

Easy walk to center, train station across the road direct into London added benifit. Good breakfast and good service. Very clean a liitle tired in places but this adds to charm in my opinion. Car parking on site at no added cost an extra benifit. Would stay again if travelling to Oxford.

The hotel was handily placed just 10-15 minutes walking distance from the centre with easy access to places we wanted to go. Warm welcome and helpful map and guidelines on arrival. Room comfortable and a good breakfast to start the day. Hosts were pleasant and helpful making it an enjoyable short break.

Excellent location, close to town centre with good parking and overlooking River Thames. On a busy road, but secondary double glazing helped reduce noise. Well maintained gardens and window boxes and access to walks along river. Excellent, freshly cooked breakfast served with a smile.Hotel is obviously part way through a renovation, with freshly decorated rooms and public areas and some new furniture and carpets. Bathroooms and some carpets badly in need of updating, though shower worked. For this reason we thought the hotel was overpriced, though we recognisethat they may reflect high costs in Oxford. We wish the current owners well, as they are clearly working hard to upgrade the property

Comfortable accommodation with a lovely garden next to a wonderful nature walk along the tow path. Free parking and a great breakfast choice with lots of advice given about how we could spend our time. Close to railway station and the city centre. Hotel a little tired but perfect for a break away with our daughter who definitely needed it as she works for the NHS

River Hotel is a comfortable, relaxed hotel. The room we had was good and the staff were friendly and very helpful, always willing to give local information. It is well situated for accessing the city centre, the best option being on foot. The hotel has its own car park, which is rare in Oxford, and rarer still, it is part if your package. Breakfast is very good with lots of options. We would stay here again.

The hotel was in an excellent location, within walking distance of the city centre, opentop bus starting point and train station.Parking was available before check-in on arrival day and until midnight on departure day! This meant we were able to spend more time in Oxford.Hotel was very clean, staff very helpful and we enjoyed excellent breakfasts. The decor was rather dated but this didn't affect our enjoyment of our stay. All in all, excellent value for money.

The River Hotel was a delight to stay at. Not the most modern ( which did not matter at all, by the way) but very clean, comfortable and welcoming. The staff were very friendly, helpful and attentive. Breakfast was superb, good quality ingredients. Bacon, egg and sausages were delicious as well as usual cereals, fruit, toast jams etc. Chef lovely, very knowledgeable regarding Oxford. Great location, just 5-10 minute walk into the centre of town and right on the river. All in all excellent value for money, I will definitely be staying again. Thank you for a lovely stay.

We stayed for 1 night while in Oxford for a house move, 27th March.Friendly and helpful welcome, room at the front was quiet despite overlooking the road (very effective secondary double glazing). Excellent cooked breakfast, with lovely river view. The hotel is independent, leased from one of the Colleges, and could do with some investment in the common area (new carpets, for example), but it is spotlessly clean throughout. Big parking area, useful when driving a large van. Lovely river walks on the doorstep and the excellent Punter vegetarian "gastro pub" nearby. So location, parking, reasonable price (for Oxford)and excellent customer service more than make up for the slight shabbiness.

Our room was clean and tidy on arrival. The one way system was clearly explained as was all other items we needed to know. Our host was happy to point out the location of some places we asked about and pointed out some river walks for us. The service during our short stay was very good and the location was ideal for the railway station and just a short walk to the city centre and points of interest.

Just had a lovely 3 night stay at the River Hotel. We were a little anxious being away from home during the covid virus but as soon as we arrived we realised that the hotel was very covid aware. Our room was extremely clean, a nice mood lamp was a lovely welcome. Our bed was comfortable and we slept well with no noise from anywhere. The English breakfast was excellent, we sat at a table overlooking the river Thames. The waitress (forgot to ask her name) was really lovely, she made us feel welcome, keeping her distance at all times, she told us about a walk into the city of Oxford following the Thames path. There is a good sized carpark at the rear of the property which was an added bonus, you can even leave your car on the last day there after check out. We recommend this hotel and would definitely stay there again if we go to Oxford. Thank you to all staff.

River Hotel is a very good place to stay if you want a comfortable, homely atmosphere. Our ensuite room was nicely decorated, spotlessly and spotlessly clean. As 2 old school friends, we appreciated the option of non-adjacent single beds, which had high-quality bed linen and were extremely comfortable. We were well looked after from my first phone call about availability and email follow-up, to the provision of fresh milk for tea in our room, and breakfast cooked to order, nothing seemed too much trouble. It was clear that all of the Covid-prevention measures were in place but not in an obtrusive way. Ideally located near to the station, with a lovely quiet garden overlooking the river and free parking, this hotel has a great personality and was excellent value for money. Thank you Ian & colleagues.

We chose the River Hotel as it was in a good location within easy walking distance of the city and with parking. It was reasonably priced with no hidden costs. We stayed in a family room in the annexe, which is across the road from the main hotel. This was fine for us, as we were only staying one night, but might have been slightly inconvenient if we were staying longer. The room was clean, warm and had everything we needed. The beds were comfortable. The décor is a little old fashioned, but this didn't bother us. The breakfast was good and the dining room was pleasant.

Hotel is very close to the rail way station (2 min walk) and bus station (7 min walk). Staff are profesional. Breakfastes are very testes. River Hotel is the right place for people who akcept the spirit of regency not for those one who is looking for modern building and very fresh furnitures. I wish the owners of the Hotel long prosperity.

The River Hotel is excellent for an enjoyable stay in Oxford. It is convenient for the railway station, has ample safe car parking, and is only a few minutes walk into the town centre. The staff are all welcoming, helpful and attentive. The rooms are slightly dated but absolutely spotless, and made up beautifully each day. The beds have traditional bedding. Personally I would prefer a duvet and suggest this as an upgrade. Breakfast is wonderful and they coped admirably with my need for gluten and dairy free. I will be returning next time I visit Oxford.

And couldn't be much more convenient if arriving by train!Perfectly adequate room - bathroom a bit 'cosy' perhaps.Excellent breakfast. And most notably and importantly - such friendly and helpful staff throughout! We have already booked to stay again for our next visit to Oxford.

The venue was perfect for our requirements. My friend and I wanted somewhere that was pleasant of course, but above all functional for our needs. The staff were efficient, knowledgable and polite without any of the usual 'over the top' synthetic mannerisms often associated with customer services these days. The location was perfectly placed by the river with boating activies viewed from the restaurant and easy access to the railway station to meet our other friends. We both had the full English breakfast the following morning and it was served quickly, piping hot and not a spot of grease, lovely. So nice that a common sense approach was taken to serving food hot. Many a high level restaurant could do to remembering those basics as I've had the misfortune to experience and have had to send it back. The accommodation is no frills. You won't find the latest style in room/bathroom fittings but we were not looking for that. We got what we wanted, an ensuite twin fit for purpose, clean and tidy with some complimentary effects. We had a comfortable undisturbed stay, lovely and peacefiul, yet a 'stone's throw' from the city centre. You will have a pleasant stay here if you are booking with the right expectations. If you want glamourous interior design, and haute cuisine then book somewhere that fits the bill and the expense. This time we were looking for a thrifty one night stay and the venue more than met our expectations. We are glad that a more traditional characterful venue still exists and that not everywhere has been taken over by modern austere minimalism of other travel hotels. We both agreed we would stay again and recommend to others. Well done and thank you.

We have just returned from two nights at the hotel and don't normally review hotels but on this occasion I think it's warranted. If you're looking for something clean and comfortable with character then this is for you. Staff were welcoming and friendly, therewas good choice at breakfast and The food was of good quality. If you want something modern like Premier Inn then this isn't for you.The decor is a bit older than most places and the bedroom did have a lot of furniture so wasnt the easiest of places to move around but the hotel is VERY clean. Sheets and bathroom in particular were spotless, I found. The sheets felt and smelled lovely and fresh! Generous with toiletries and everything you need is there. Car park at the back, less than 15 mins to the centre, rail or bus station. Would stay again.

Near enough to drive or get a bus to the Cotswold villages and Blenheim Palace. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was delicious with more than I could eat. Room was clean and comfortable although Alex Polizzi would have a field day with the whole hotel decoration but I guess that is what adds to the charm

Really enjoyed the stay at the River. We needed to be near the train station and this hotel is ideally located for this.Although city centre hotel, the location is right next to a river so you don't feel that you are in the city - but only a few minutes walk to the shops and restaurants. The service is excellent - friendly staff.Fantastic breakfast as well.Parking is ideal.

All the staff are excellent apartfrom the extremely rude owner. Lovely breakfast. We were in Room 19 which is a garret room with its own bathroom which is separate from the room. It wasn't bad but not really private and it should not be £120 like the other rooms. The door to the hallway leading to the room and bathroom could not be looked. Staff very kindly cooked some Waitrose microwave meals for us.

We traveled around the UK during 28 days. Our two days were at Oxford, and we decided to stay in the River hotel because was near near the town, but out of the caos. Finally we found a lovely house, with lovely people there; always smiling and in good mood.Very confortable rooms, beautifull backyard next to the river, and the best breakfast we had ever in the UK.

The hotel is a bit in need of a refresh but despite the dated decor the rooms are clean and functional and the hosts are very friendly and accommodating. Breakfast is good and overall, for its location and price, this is a good hotel. We would stay again.

Good location within 10 minutes walk to the bus station and center of Oxford. Very good and well cooked English breakfast. The hotel is starting to get a little worn in some parts (eg the beds in our room). Had wished there was shower soap an not just bath foam. Otherwise Ok and the cleaning was good.Very nice staff. Can imagine staying here again.

I had a lovely long weekend. The hotel was really well located, just a three minute walk from the train station. My room was really nice with a bath and shower, I liked that bubble bath was provided. Breakfast was excellent with a good choice and service from a reasonable time. I would definitely recommend the River Hotel and would stay again if I returned to Oxford. The staff were friendly and helpful and there was always someone around if you needed assistance.

Rooms are clean and comfortable but the hotel looks like one out of the 1950’s. Staff are pleasant and helpful. Hotel is close to the train station but a 15 minute walk to the historic area. The hotel is in need of fresh paint and carpet replacement. I think it is overpriced for what you get.

We chose the River Hotel due to its proximity to Oxford Station on arrival and the river. We joined a Hotel Boat literally minutes away from your hotel on the 25th July so ideal for us.The lady on reception on our arrival was extremely helpful as we asked her where The Punter was, as we knew it was minutes away, and she also gave us details of an alternative should we not get in at The Punter but all was fine.On our day of departure we left our luggage with you whilst we went on foot to explore Oxford, on returning to the hotel the man on reception returned our luggage as we sat for a few minutes in the lounge and he supplied us with very welcome iced water. The breakfast in the morning was a good selction.

I chose River Hotel because it is close to the station and it overlooks the river. I enjoyed eating my brilliant full English breakfast looking onto the lovely garden and the river. My compliments to the chef! Most things are a little dated in the hotel and I found my shower tricky to operate, I couldn't open a window and my room was very warm, but the staff were keen to help. My first room had a small bathroom but I was moved when another room became vacant. I can't fault the service but I still felt the rooms overpriced.

Thank you for your review Mrs Massey. When booking on a third party website such as Expedia you are quoted a per room rate, whereas if you had booked direct on our website we offer single occupancy rates, which would have been a saving over the three nights. We are glad you enjoyed the hospitality and service and would trust you consider the River Hotel should you visit Oxford a second time, as you know there is plenty to do here to keep you occupied.A warm thank you from all the team.

Although not in the city center, I believe it’s one of the best places for its value of money. Almost 5 m walk to the George street and from that to the other places. And a bonus if you are a. MBA or EMBA student, the walk is only 3 m. Moreover, compared to the B.B. places, this hotel by far has better room and bigger. The only remark is the TV. Almost a 20†screen. The owners are good couple and they take personal care of their resedents. I liked it a lot.

This was our 2nd stay at the River Hotel as we had a balloon flight planned but was cancelled the first time. We had no hesitation in coming back as the service and hospitality the 1st time was excellent and that was equaled if not bettered 2nd time around. Our Balloon flight was very early morning and so they happily made us up a breakfast tray the night before to have as we were out before Breakfast began. The balloon flight took place and we got back about 30 mins after breakfast had finished but they were so kind and put on a full breakfast service just for us despite having just finished setting up again. The welcome is friendly and nothing is too much trouble. The location is great as you are close enough to be a short walk to the centre of town but far enough out to be quiet and peaceful along the river. As we had 2 nights we were checking out on the Sunday morning but were pleased to be told we could keep the car in the car park as we were going back into Oxford for the day.The rooms are basic but very clean and tidy with comfortable beds and plenty of room. Will definitely be coming back.

Convenient walking distance (for carrying luggage) from train station, and to historic sites, churches, and museums in the city center.Adequately sized room and restroom. Sit-in restaurant, and take-out food establishment across street. Convenience store nearby. Although Botley Rd. is well trafficated, the evenings were quiet.Excellent cooked and served breakfast. Hotel staff is most helpful in guiding visitors for the most reasonable travel plans to out-of-town sites such as Blenheim Palace. Overall, I consider the River Hotel (price, location, food, staff help) a financial value. U.S.A. visitor

There are lots of nice things about this hotel. Excellent location; very quiet; walking distance from Thames path and city center. Tasty hot breakfast. Wonderful staff. Coffee, tea and biscuits are available in your room. On the downside, we had two problems with the rooms (the building is old and not easily changed) (1) to take a shower, you have to climb into a big tub which is awkward and somewhat slippery and (2) central heat is only on during certain hours, which means that you either roast or freeze if you are in the bed near the heater.
Response
Thank you for your kind review Catherine and we are delighted you enjoyed your stay with us.Our bathrooms include a bath tub with over bath shower; our customers can decide whether to have a bath or shower and we have had positive feedback suggesting these homely touches are often lacking in other hotels. Despite the added space the bath takes up we hope they are welcome, especially after a long walk in Oxford, or along the River Thames. The heating system is thermostatically controlled and each radiator has its own controller as well. You stayed with us during the change of seasons and although the heating can\'t be turned off completely at this time of year, there were some nights were it was probably not really necessary.

Classic British small hotel/B&B. Friendly, good breakfast. Excellent location if you need to be close to bus and train station. It is only half a mile from the bus station, only 3 minutes from train station. Some might say it is expensive for what you get, but that is because it is in the center of Oxford! Yes the building is old, so floors creak or have slants to them. That's part of the charm, but was never an inconvenience. Showers were nice and hot. My ensuite twin was spacious and looked out over the garden.

Sadly only one night spent here, it was a great place to stay, very close to the train station and by the river, only a short walk into centre of Oxford. Room comfortable and clean. Staff couldn't have been more helpful at breakfast, even providing vegetarian option for my daughter and cooked breakfasts presented beautifully. They even let us leave our bags until we went for our train, so we didn't need to carry them around the shops.

Great location, ideal to leave the car. Fifteen minutes walk into centre. Accomodation comfortable but a bit tired, plenty of hot water. Staff friendly and helpful. Great breakfast. Five minutes walk to The Punter traditional pub with good food.

We had a lovely 4-day stay . Comfortable and clean rooms, friendly and accomadating staff and excellent breakfasts. Our early (by 3 of us) and very late (by our 4th) arrivals, the need to have a large package of camping equipment received and then picked up days after our departure as well as our need to use the left luggage room for a few days after check out were all handeled with smiles and efficiency by the staffEasy access to train/bus and city center but quiet riverside garden and lovelywalks. In a lovely part of town. Excellent 'heritage pub'only a few minutes walk away. The hotel is a little more worn then many Americans are used to but all of our party enjoyed it and would highly recommend.

Walking distance from train station and town. We used the hotel as our base to explore the Cotswold area. We also enjoyed walking on the trail along the river right outside the hotel. Great hot breakfast and friendly staff. And shower was great.

As described- very close to station and town centre and staff are very helpful. Breakfast was fast and plentiful, there is luggage storage and we were able to leave the car there the next day.Decor is a little worn, but it's clean and showers are strong.

Basic accommodation in a very handy location. The staff were friendly and more than made up for the barebones facilities. Breakfast was included in our price.

Although only a two star hotel we found the accommodation adequate. Not used to sleeping with tightly tucked in blankets though. More used to duvets. The staff were very pleasant and helpful.

I'd initially booked 2 nights at the nearby YHA but due to the noise levels, needed to move elsewhere.Luckily the River Hotel had vacancies and proved to be a quiet location, with friendly staff and an excellent breakfast - and very reasonably priced too!Should I visit Oxford again, I'd book here straight away!

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Although the rooms are a bit dated, they are clean and comfortable. The breakfast in the morning was superb, even the chef came out to check we were happy with everything! Service was faultless. Would stay again .

We spent 3 nights at the River Hotel in Oxford. We were able to check in at 11 AM.The staff is friendly and helpful. Our room was clean and comfortable. The hotel is in a very convenient location, an easy walk from the station and right on the River Thames. It is not inexpensive, but the price is all inclusive: free parking, wifi, and a very good breakfast in a pretty room with fresh flowers on the tables. I think it is very good value given the location. We had no issues with traffic noise in our 3 floor front room. We found the staff to be friendly, cheerful and helpful.Be aware that there are a lot of stairs and no lifts so people with limited mobility might be better looking elsewhere.

The hotel is in a great location and has plenty of parking space which is a real bonus in Oxford. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. Breakfast was excellent and freshly cooked. Downsides;poor reception on the TV only 3 channels coming through, pillows very flat. Rooms were clean.

We have stayed here many times and have always found the service friendly and helpful. The breakfasts are very good with plenty of choice. It perhaps needs updating, but, on the plus side, it is also very convenient for walking into Oxford.

Service was excellent. We received a friendly, informative reception and the breakfast was exceptional for a 2 star hotel. It is located a short walk from the station, or if travelling by car there is parking at the hotel. It is within easy walking distance to the center of Oxford and I would recommend the River Hotel as a good, affordable base to explore the area.

Excellent location very close to railway station and short walk to town. Quiet. Basic but comfortable accommodation. Staff friendly and helpful. Freshly cooked breakfast great (rather than something that's been sitting in a bain-marie.

This hotel is ideally situated for arriving by public transport. It is an easy walk into Oxford city centre & has great river walks immediately outside the hotel. The staff are friendly, welcoming & knowledgeable about the area. Rooms are small but clean & well equipped. Good selection for breakfast. I imagine it may be a little noisy when hotel is full but this is a small price to pay for such a convenient location. Good value for a city centre hotel. I will be staying here again in the future.

My sister and I spent two nights at the River Hotel, and it was lovely! The staff is very inviting and accommodating-- even preparing vegan food for our breakfast upon request-- and the hotel is very well kept and clean. It is in a great location, right next to the train station, and either a short walk/drive to town on the main street or a longer, picturesque walk along the river.Very simple and quaint, I highly recommend!

My mother & I attended a family reunion in Oxford and were delighted with the location of the River Hotel (walked to everywhere from there), and with the bright, spacious room, hospitality & selection available at breakfast. Will be back.

The River Hotel in Oxford was conveniently located to the Oxford train station which was important to us as we were walking with our bags from the train station. The room was comfortable and the service was great in that we were able to leave our bags in a locked room while we visited Blenhiem Palace for the day.

We had a very pleasant stay at this hotel. It is placed so conveniently to walk into Oxford, we did not use our car at all. The staff were wonderfully friendly and were happy to help with all our enquiries. The cooked breakfast was very good and toast and drinks replenished when needed. We did not feel rushed at any time. The owners are making efforts to bring this hotel up to date but the decor in our room was tired, however all was kept clean and tidy for us. My only advise to River Hotel is either replace or take down the blinds at the front, they don't give a very good impression.
